What's a Woodland Farm?

We've chosen to make ours a woodland farm where trees are planted to grow into woodland, which benefits nature and the landscape for decades before some of it is carefully managed to provide income.

The farm used to be for grazing livestock but this creates a species poor environment as well as being a lot of uneconomical work!

With woodland most of the hard work is at planting and for the early years of maintenance.  Then you get to a point where you just have to sit back and watch for many years.

We grow broadleaf woodland which is rich with wildlife diversity and we have a wide species range - unlike monoculture woodlands which can be a bit sterile.

The woodland model fits very well with our caravan guests for walks and leisure.  Our old neglected woodlands have undergone a regeneration scheme where dying Ash and mature Douglas Fir have been removed to make way for a more diverse broadleaf woodland and new woodland has been added.

Some species are intended for harvest as Lumber but in many decades to come so there is a lifetime of natural habitat to enjoy first.  Even when the time comes to harvest, th e woods will not be clear-felled because of the diversity of planting.  There will always be woodland to enjoy
