Nature Notes...

Every year we see Hummingbird Hawkmoths - usually on the buddleia bushes

2025 - pair of Goshawks came to stay.  Our forestry agent spotted and called in their ecologist to confirm and woodland work halted.  Buzzards harassed them constantly and eventually they moved on after a couple of months having had their fill of pigeons.

Kingfishers occasionally spotted here - but you have to be quiet

Signal Crayfish - many spotted this year.  You have to have a licence to catch them - even these invasive ones.  If caught they must be euthanised and not allowed to return to the watercourse.

Crab spider waiting for prey.  The insect kingdom is the most diverse kingdom on the planet

Cirl Buntings nest here and we protect their environment.  Surprisingly they next very close to the caravans so guests are likely to see them even if they do not recognise them.

We have more than 10 species of bat here - including this one, a Brown Long-eared Bat.  Our roof is a bat roost and more bat boxes going in when the old plantation tree work is concluded.

Silver washed fritillary - common sight in summer and quite striking against dark woodland background. The underside of the wing has a silver section hence the name.

Roe Deer are welcome here.  We do not shoot them.  Damage to trees is minimal and if they become problematic there are simple, harmless ways to encourage them to move on. Mothers often leave their fawns - PLEASE DO NOT LET YOUR DOG CHASE THEM.  If your dog wont come back to your command please keep it on a lead.

Foxes are also safe here and seen regularly.  Again, please do not let you dog chase them.  Badgers would also be safe here except we have only ever seen one travelling through and no sets.

working on lots more...
